The ride

The Coast to Coast, or C2C, is one of Britain’s classic cycling challenges. My ride started on the Cumbrian coast at Whitehaven, climbed through the Lake District, crossed the North Pennines and finished on the North Sea coast at Sunderland.

Riders traditionally dip their rear wheel in the Irish Sea at the start and their front wheel in the North Sea at the finish.

What makes it special

  • Big landscapes: the Lake District fells give way to the wide-open North Pennines.
  • The climbs: long ascents such as Hartside are the ones riders remember.
  • Quiet roads and traffic-free paths: including old railway lines in County Durham.
  • The finish: few rides give such a clear sense of having travelled somewhere.

Why it’s a favourite

You start by one sea and finish by another, and everything in between, from the hills and villages to the café stops, makes it feel like a proper journey. It is hard enough to feel like an achievement, and beautiful enough that you barely notice the effort.

Thinking of riding it?

Most riders allow three to five days. Book accommodation early in the summer, pack for changeable weather, and make sure your gearing is up to the climbs.
